The first issue of Elm Leaves Journal was published by the State University of New York- College for Teachers Buffalo (now Buffalo State) in 1949 and featured content by students. Over the years, the journal has published poems, art, short fiction, and even musical compositions.
In the 1970s, the journal took a turn as the “Elm Leevz” journal.
Then, ELJ was reimagined as a national literary journal for the 21st century, publishing work from contributors around the world. In addition to the above issues, recent themes have included "Endurance," "Bliss," "Eclipse," and "Harvest." The cover design was by Joan Wilking.
